Spring 1 Newsletter

Welcome back and Happy New Year!

A warm welcome back from all the staff in Year 1! We hope you had a lovely Christmas and we can’t wait to get going with all the brilliant learning we’ve got planned this term. We had an amazing topic day, introducing our new topic – Far, Far Away! Thank you to all our families for making such a brilliant effort.

English

Our key text for this half term is The Jolly Postman. We will be writing postcards and letters using capital letters, full stops and finger spaces. We will also be using conjunctions to join sentences together.

Reading is a vital part of learning in Year 1 and we would love our children to develop a love of reading and a rich vocabulary. The best way to do this is by sharing lots of books together at home as well as at school. Home readers will continue to be changed every Friday so please make sure you fill in the reading record and send them in each week.

We will also be sending spellings home every other Friday. Helping your child to learn these at home will really help them with the spelling activities we will be doing in school.

Maths

During the Spring term we will be building on the children’s knowledge of place value, addition and subtractions. We will also be finding out about measures, particularly length and height.

Topic

Our topic, ‘Far, Far Away’ has strong links to English, computing, geography and history.

Science – identifying and sorting materials

Art – Picasso, printing

RE – How do different religions welcome new members?

Geography – the United Kingdom

Computing – sending emails

DT – using different materials to make a house for the three little pigs

History – The Queen

PE – Games

Enrichment

A trip to our local church. We will be holding a tea party fundraising event and a movie night.

We have P.E. every Thursday. The children should have a white t-shirt, black shorts and a pair of velcro or pull on pumps (no laces please). Please make sure that P.E. kits are in a bag and all items are clearly named. Please let your child practise getting changed into their P.E. kit at home.

If you have any queries or worries, contact us via the Junior Office. Please inform us if your child is being picked up by an adult at the end of the school day who is not on the list.

Thank you for your continued support.
