Welcome to Year 2 and a new school year! J
We hope you had a lovely summer and are ready for a fabulous year! We have lots of fun things planned and can’t wait to get started. The Teachers in year 2 are Mrs Brackenridge (2B) and Miss Powell (2P) and Mrs Burchardt is our Learning Support Assistant. Mrs Burchardt will work across both classes sometimes taking groups or individuals out or supporting in class.
We want to encourage all our children to enjoy and engage with books and reading and we ask you to support this process through our Home Reading Scheme. Children have the opportunity to use books from school OR home and their progress needs to be recorded in their Home Reading Record Book. The reading record will be monitored in school each week so we will need Reading Record Books to be returned to school every Monday.
*The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you will go. *
We have P.E. on Wednesdays. The children should have a white T-shirt, black/navy shorts and a pair of pumps (football kits are not allowed). Trainers can also be included for outdoor sports. Please make sure that PE kits are in a bag and all items are clearly named. (Just a reminder that our school policy clearly states no jewellery, for safety reasons).
Our Creative Curriculum topic for this half of the Autumn Term is ‘The Big Smoke.’ We will be learning all about the Great Fire of London and the plague. We will find out about different materials in science and link this to our understanding of how the fire spread.
In English we will be using our knowledge of the Great Fire of London and Samuel Pepys’ diary for the children to learn about diary writing and eventually write their own diary entry. In Maths we will learn about place value by adding with ordering and comparing numbers to 100. The children will also have the opportunity to develop their problem solving through logic and reasoning tasks.
We will send home spellings every two weeks on a Monday. We will take words from the Year 2 Statutory spellings list or focus on a particular spelling pattern and every two weeks we will do different tasks to incorporate the spellings to monitor the children’s progress and understanding. We will upload maths homework to the children’s Activelearn account (usernames and passwords are the same as last year’s but will be sent home again as a reminder). The children are welcome to make a project at home linked to our topic ‘The Big Smoke’ . We would love to see their creative masterpieces and share them with the year group. Please bring them into school on the week beginning Monday 18th October.
Other useful information
We will be having some Golden Time on Thursday afternoon, the children are invited to bring 1 small toy/jigsaw/ game into school, no battery operated toys or fragile items please.
We have all the equipment the children need for learning in school so they will not require a pencil case.
Thank you for all your support. Let’s have a great first term!
Mrs Brackenridge and Miss Powell
