Year 2 Newsletter Summer 1, 2018
Our Creative Curriculum topic for the first half of the Summer Term will be all things related to ‘Chocolate’. We will be researching how chocolate is made and where it is grown, focusing on cacao that is grown by Fairtrade farmers.
In literacy we will be looking at explanation texts and will be exploring non-chorological reports with a focus on The Victorians and writing a scientific report about owls. To enhance our creative curriculum topic, we will be reading Roald Dahl’s book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
In mathematics we will be learning to tell the time to the hour, half hour and in 15 minute intervals. We will also be using addition and subtraction and rounding of numbers to solve word problems.
In Year 2 the children are invited to create their own project about Chocolate. Children can include information, pictures and models to support their project.
We want to continue to encourage all our children to enjoy and engage with books and reading and we ask you to support this process through our Home Reading Scheme. Children have the opportunity to use books from school OR home and their progress needs to be recorded in their Home Reading Record Book. The reading record will be monitored in school each week so we will need Reading Record Books to be returned to school every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
As part of our topic ‘Chocolate’ children will be encouraged to take part in a competition to design their own ‘Fairtrade Chocolate bar wrapper’. The closing date will be Friday 18th May 2018. There will be a small prize for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each class and all children who enter will receive a certificate of achievement for their participation. We encourage children to be creative and inventive!
We have P.E. on Tuesday. The children should have a white T-shirt, black/navy shorts and a pair of pumps (football kits are not allowed). Trainers can also be included for outdoor sports. Please make sure that PE kits are in a bag and all items are clearly named. (Just a reminder that our school policy clearly states no jewellery, for safety reasons).
Miss Nelson (2N) and Mrs Agis (2A) are the teachers working in Year 2. Mrs Burchardt and Mrs Peers are our Learning Support Assistant and Ms Fisher is our volunteer LSA. The children will also be working with Mr. McClure one of our P.E. specialists and Mrs. Gomez-Gray our Spanish teacher.
