Year 2 Newsletter Spring 2, 2018
Spring mid-term update!
Our Creative Curriculum topic for the second half of the Spring Term is ‘Harry Potter’. To support this topic, in History we will explore the origins of castles and children will be creating a family coat of arms.
In literacy, children will be writing profiles of the main characters from the book and we will be using extracts from the first Harry Potter film, to help bring the characters to life! We will also be exploring various traditional tales, including writing alternative versions or ‘twisted’ tales, using films such as ‘Hoodwinked;’ to explore children’s views of Heroes and Villains.
In mathematics we are continuing to work on 2, 3, 5 and 10 times tables and focusing heavily on word problems involving number, measure and money. We will also find half of odd and even numbers to 30; and revise and recognise 1/2s, 1/4s, 1/3s and 2/3s of shapes. We would encourage you to support your child in learning to count up in 2s, 5s and 10s and support them in telling the time to the hour, half hour, quarter past and quarter to the hour.
In Spanish, children are continuing to learn their numbers to 30 and have been learning to say the words for shapes and colours.
In Year 2 the children are invited to create their own project on Harry Potter. Children can include information, pictures and models to support their project.
We want to continue to encourage all our children to enjoy and engage with books and reading and we ask you to support this process through our Home Reading Scheme. Children have the opportunity to use books from school OR home and their progress needs to be recorded in their Home Reading Record Book. The reading record will be monitored in school each week so we will need Reading Record Books to be returned to school every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
Just a reminder, that you are invited to attend a Parents’ Evening on Tuesday 20th and Wednesday 21st March 2018. It is an opportunity to meet with us to discuss your child’s progress. Appointment times will be allocated to those who have returned their slips.
We have P.E. on Tuesday. The children should have a white T-shirt, black/navy shorts and a pair of pumps (football kits are not allowed). Trainers can also be included for outdoor sports. Please make sure that PE kits are in a bag and all items are clearly named. (Just a reminder that our school policy clearly states no jewellery, for safety reasons).
