Year 3 Newsletter Spring 1, 2019

Happy New Year

Home Reading

Please encourage your child to continue to read at home regularly. Home readers should be returned to school at least once a week so that we can ensure your child has a new book to read as soon as possible. In literacy we are currently looking at ‘Myths and Legends’.

Communication

Please inform us if your child is being picked up by an adult at the end of the school day, who is not on the list of people who can collect your child. All Year 3 pupils need the class teacher to say they can go to the person who has come to pick them up at the end of the day.

Physical Education

We have Physical Education on a Thursday morning. The children should have a white T-shirt, black/navy shorts and a pair of pumps, (football kits are not allowed). Trainers can also be included for outdoor sports. If your child has not yet brought their PE kit into school, could you please send it in as soon as possible. If you are experiencing difficulties getting any items of kit please let us know. We are waiting for the after school club list to be complied for this half term. As soon as we know what clubs are available, will let you know as soon as possible.

Swimming

3M will be starting their swimming lessons this half term. They will swim every Wednesday for the next six weeks.

Snack Children can bring in a healthy snack every day. We are encouraging the children to bring their snack in a reusable container; this will help to reduce the amount of plastic waste we as a school produce and will help the environment.

Curriculum

Our Creative Curriculum topic for Spring 1 is ‘The Groovy Greeks.’ We will be learning about all aspects of life in Ancient Greece. The children will be taking part in a Greek hero and heroine fashion show. The costumes will be designed and made by the children from recycled materials. In literacy we are looking at Myths and Legends. The children will also have a grammar focus for each writing session. In maths we will be continuing to use addition and subtraction strategies and inverse operations alongside multiplication and division. The children will also be exploring fractions of shapes and amounts. In Geography we will be continuing to learn about the Mediterranean. We will also be learning about countries located in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

Homework

In Year 3 the children are invited to create their own project about our topic. This could be to recreate their own Greek building. This half term we will continue to give the spelling lists in advance. The spelling tests will continue to take place on a Monday. All spellings are linked to our topic and the Year 3 National Curriculum wordlist. Online homework will also be allocated this half term linked to our topic.
