Spring 1 Newsletter

Year 2 Newsletter January 2018

A very warm welcome back and a Happy New Year! We hope that you had a wonderful Christmas. Please read on to find out about the exciting learning journey that we have planned for your children over the next five weeks.

Curriculum

Our Creative Curriculum topic for the first half of the Spring Term is ‘The Polar Regions’. We will be researching the animals in the Arctic and Antarctic and how they survive; the Inuits of the North Pole and exploring the history and events of the sinking of the Titanic and Scott’s expedition to the South Pole.

In literacy, we will explore the features of non-fiction texts and carry out our own research project using various books to help children create their own information texts on the Polar Regions. We will also compare this to a narrative when children write about the story of the Titanic, in diary form, from a passenger’s perspective.

In mathematics we will solve multiplication problems using the 2, 5 and 10 times tables and representing multiplications as arrays. We will also apply these skills when solving division problems. We will be using applying our times tables to money as well to easily identify larger amounts of coins. We will further explore giving change for subtraction application.

In Spanish children will be continuing to learn numbers, familiar greetings and family names.

The children are invited to create their own project on the Polar Regions. They can write reports, create, pictures and models to support their project. Here are some useful websites that may be of interest to research the topic:

Home Reading

We want to continue to encourage all our children to enjoy and engage with books and reading and we ask you to support this process through our Home Reading Scheme. Children have the opportunity to use books from school OR home and their progress needs to be recorded in their Home Reading Record Book. The reading record will be monitored in school each week so we will need Reading Record Books to be returned to school every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. We are only changing the books on these three days so that children have two days at a time to read a book and deepen their understanding through in depth discussions and questions at home.

P.E.

We have P.E. on Tuesdays. The children should have a white T-shirt, black/navy shorts and a pair of pumps (football kits are not allowed). Trainers can also be included for outdoor sports. Please make sure that PE kits are in a bag and all items are clearly named. (Just a reminder that our school policy clearly states no jewellery, for safety reasons).

Teachers & Support Staff

The children will also be working with Mr. McClure one of our P.E. specialists, Mrs. Owen our Outdoor School Leader and Mrs. Gomez-Gray our Spanish teacher.

We look forward to working with you and having an exciting, successful 2018.

Signed:

Mrs Agis, Miss Nelson, Mrs Burchardt, Mrs. Peers
