During this phase the children learn:
- Letters and the sounds they make, including digraphs (two letters making one sounds):
j v w x y z zz qu ch sh th ng ai ee igh oa oo
ar ow ur or oi ear air ure er
The Phase 3 Letter Mat gives examples for each digraph if you are not sure of the sounds each group of letters make. ‘oo’ is extra complicated as it can make two different sounds, as in ‘moon’ and ‘good’. The ‘th’ sound also varies slightly, e.g. in ‘thin’ and ‘this’.
he she we me be was you they all are my her
- High frequency words that can be read by blending the sounds of the letters in the word:
will that this then them with see for now down
A complete list of words that can be read by blending Phase 3 letter sounds is also provided as a photocopy from ‘Letters and Sounds’.
