Autumn 2 Topic Web

Year 6: Industrial Revolution

History, Geography & Science: We have organised an amazing school trip to Croxteth Hall where we will bring history ‘alive’. Children will be required to dress up as Victorian servants to experience, first hand, what life was like for a Victorian child. All costumes will be provided by us, so no need for you to worry about that! We haven’t yet received a date for the trip but we will send a letter home as soon as we find out. Sticking with our history topic, we will explore the works of Georgian & Victorian palaeontologist, Mary Anning, & how Charles Darwin developed her ideas on evolution & natural selection. In geography, we will be investigating rivers around the world.

Literacy: This half term, some of our writing will be linked to history, geography & science. We will be writing a biography of Charles Darwin and a recount of our trip to Croxteth Hall. We will write a non-chronological historical report about the ‘Age of Railways’ & transport. We will also write a spooky story, formal letters and a range poems & prayers. Our class novel is Carrie’s War by Nina Bawden. In Year 6, we study the whole range of punctuation and we will focus on prefixes, suffixes, sentence types and verb tense agreement.

Maths: We will be investigating the properties of 2D shape and finding missing angles in triangles and quadrilaterals. Children will be challenged to calculate the interior & exterior angles of regular polygons. Year 6 children will also calculate area & perimeter and they will apply their problem solving and reasoning skills in a range of different contexts. In number, we will begin to learn how to add, subtract, multiply & divide fractions. We will calculate percentages & find decimal and fraction equivalences.

Art & Design: This half term, we will be researching the works of Friedensreich Hundertwasser who was an artist, architect, environmentalist and eco-activist. He drew his inspiration from nature and we will produce pictures in this style using oil pastels.

P.E. will alternate each week on a Wednesday or Thursday. This half term children will compete in a range of games & dance activities. The children should have a white T-shirt, black shorts and a pair of pumps. Trainers are only allowed for outdoor sports. We have a ‘no jewelry’ policy in the school and all pierced earrings will need to be removed. P.E. kits should stay in your child’s locker. We will send them home at Christmas for washing.

Homework: Spellings will be sent home on Friday ready for a test the following Friday. Maths and Literacy (including online reading books) will be set most weeks on Active Learn. Please see your class teacher if you have any problems.
