Autumn 1 Newsletter

Year 3 Newsletter, Autumn 1, 2018

Home Reading

Please encourage your child to read at home regularly. Home readers should be returned to school at least once a week so that we can ensure your child has a new book to read as soon as possible. In literacy we are currently looking at ‘Stories with Familiar Settings’. We are encouraging the children to identify how authors use language well, especially the use of adjectives. Towards the end of this term we will be looking at instruction writing. Please support your child with reading instructions for games and recipes etc. Your child should sound out any unfamiliar words when reading to you.

Communication

Could you please return your data forms as soon as possible at the start of the new school year. All Year 3 pupils need the class teacher to say they can go to the person who has come to pick them up at the end of the day. Thank you for your patience as we dismiss the children at home time.

Please note that Year 3 children from September 2018 will be dismissed from the rear entrance of the junior hall. Adults collecting children should make their way down the right-hand side of the junior building and form an orderly queue. Signs will be displayed to show the way.

Healthy Snack

On a Monday to Thursday in the juniors we encourage all pupils’ to bring a healthy snack (1 piece of fruit or vegetable) from home. School only provides a snack on a Friday.

P.E

We have P.E. on a Thursday morning. The children should have a white T-shirt, black/navy shorts and a pair of pumps, (football kits are not allowed). Trainers can also be included for outdoor sports. Please make sure your child keeps their PE kit in school.

Curriculum

Our Creative Curriculum topic for Autumn 1 is ‘The Valley of the Kings.’ We will be learning about Ancient Egypt through History and Geography. In Art we will design and make Egyptian masks and reproduce an Egyptian wall painting with watercolor paint. The children will also develop their knowledge and understanding of their rights and responsibilities under the United Nations Convention. These rights will help the Year 3 children to create a ‘Class Charter’. In Science our topic is ‘Animals including Humans’. We will link our work on the human body to our topic on Ancient Egypt and the mummification procedure.

Homework

In Year 3 the children are invited to create their own project about Ancient Egypt. As this is a wide ranging topic, the homework can be about any aspect of Ancient Egyptian life. We will be sending home the individual logon details for Abacus the school online homework programme. Children will be given a reminder in class on how to access the online homework. Every week we will send home spellings linked to the Year 3 National Curriculum wordlist.

School Visits

As part of our curriculum we will be visiting the Egyptian section of the World Museum and the Walker Art Gallery in November. Details regarding the trip will follow on shortly.
