Year 6 Newsletter September 2016

A very warm welcome back!

Good communication is an essential part of your child’s happiness and progress in Year 6. If you have any queries or worries, please do not hesitate to contact us. We are normally on the playground in the morning and at home time and we welcome any feedback from parents. Alternatively, you can make an appointment to speak to your class teacher via the main junior office. We very much look forward to meeting you at Parent’s Evening on the 19th & 20th October.

We want to encourage all our children to enjoy and engage with books and reading and we ask you to support this process by reading regularly with your child. Children have the opportunity to use books from school OR home and their progress needs to be recorded in their Home Reading Record Book. Also, your child will be set regular reading activities as part of our online homework scheme. Children are invited to present information, models, reports and explanations regarding our topic ‘Going Global’. We have also have an online maths and English homework scheme and your child has received their individual login details. If you do not have internet access at home, all city libraries have free access to computers and you can login to the Active Learn homework scheme from any computer. If you are still experiencing problems using the online homework scheme, please let your class teacher know. In addition to this, regular spellings and times tables will be sent home to learn.

We have P.E. every Monday. This half term is gymnastics. The children should have a white T-shirt, black shorts and a pair of pumps. Trainers are only allowed for outdoor sports. We have a ‘no jewelry’ policy in the school and all pierced earrings will need to be removed. Please make sure that P.E. kits are in a bag and all items are clearly named. P.E. kits should stay in your child’s locker. We can send them home at half term for washing. Year 6 will have four swimming sessions this half term on Tuesday afternoons from 13th September to 4th October inclusive. A separate letter has already been sent home with details of swimming kit.

In Literacy, we are reading Classic Fiction and poetry. Children will be writing their own responses to the texts read in class. Other fiction writing will include character portraits and personal responses to a piece of text e.g. the children will be expected to use evidence form the text to back up their point of view. Our class novel is Carrie’s War by Nina Bawden. In non-fiction genres, children will concentrate on report writing. In maths, we will be focusing on mental maths strategies, place value up to10 million (10,000,000),number (including all four operations and their inverse), fraction & decimal equivalences (up to 3 place decimals), missing number problems (algebra), 2D shape & their properties, measurements (including perimeters) and naming and constructing angles. Our topic this half term is ‘Going Global’. In this topic we will be studying the Earth and its composition, continental drift, tectonic plates, volcanoes, earthquakes and the changes the Earth has gone through over time (from Pangaea to the modern position of our continents). Art, for this half term, will focus on the work of Friedensriech Hundertwasser. In science, we will study the work of Charles Darwin, Mary Anning & Alfred Wallace & their contribution to Evolution & Natural Selection.
